What is the REACH regulation?
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is a European Union regulation (EC 1907/2006) designed to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks of chemicals. It applies to manufacturers, importers, and downstream users—including companies in the metalworking and galvanizing sectors.
REACH compliance is mandatory for all industrial activities involving chemical substances, including the use of zinc and pre-treatment chemicals in hot-dip galvanizing.
Is hot-dip galvanizing REACH-compliant?
Yes. The hot-dip galvanizing process, when carried out by certified providers, is fully compliant with REACH. The zinc metal used is registered, and all chemical treatments—such as pickling, degreasing, and fluxing—must be based on substances authorized under REACH guidelines.
However, companies sending components for galvanizing also play a key role in maintaining compliance throughout the supply chain.
What should metalworking companies do?
1. Declare any prior surface treatments
Coatings, paints, oils, or residues on parts may contain substances restricted under REACH. These must be disclosed to the galvanizer.
2. Ensure raw material traceability
Provide documentation for steels or alloys used, especially if treated or coated during prior production stages.
3. Work with certified galvanizing providers
Choose partners who maintain full chemical documentation, tracking, and safe handling procedures aligned with REACH.
4. Avoid banned or restricted substances
Collaborate with your supply chain to replace any non-compliant substances used in production.
